I am making fig and walnut biscotti!
from this recipe by deb over at smitten kitchen. again. i am in love with her.
for five days over new year I had five teenage girls staying in my teeny flat. three from poland and two from croatia. they were here for the taize conference.
they were sweet. but very teenager.
i forgot how messy i was as a teenager. and how long i took to get ready every morning.
and there were five of them. in my teeny tiny flat.
it was chaos.
it took about four hours of solid tidying and cleaning after they left to make the place look habitable again. and did i mention how small my flat is?
and they had somehow managed to delete all my itunes playlists. those playlists had taken years to perfect. the roadtrip mix for next time jen and i go driving, gone. the seduction mix, begun as a wedding gift for hannah and philipp and nearly perfected is gone. the tunes perfect for turning up to top volume to drown out my thoughts, gone.
i’m so sad.
but they made up for all their chaos by buying me gifts.
the polish girls bought me gold tea cups, a lace table cloth and… a large painting of a grumpy looking virgin mary with strangely proportioned baby jesus on her lap. “how thoughtful” as J commented. “just what you’ve always wanted” said R.
yep, no idea where that is going to go.
that didn’t make up for the chaos.
but those two wonderful, beautiful, perfect croatian girls who will forever have my love and affection.
because they brought me two ENORMOUS bags of dried figs from their sunny croatian island.
I am in heaven!
so hence (yes, I realise how long this explanation has been) the fig and walnut biscotti in the oven, currently on it’s first bake.
i procrastinated at work today looking up fig recipes and this one came top of the list because apart from the orange zest which i just left out, i had all the ingredients and didn’t have to go out and risk breaking my neck on the icy snowy hill down to the delhaize shop and go.
i’ll let you know how they turn out. although my camera lens decided to break this week and my personal sony customer service provider says it probably is fatal. so sad. so no pictures…
and while i’m waiting for my temperamental oven to finish baking them, here’s the list of fig recipes i am planning on attempting next once i force myself out to the shops:
- Frugtbrod (fruit bread in Danish, imagine the o has one of those diagonal lines through it) – and I have waited patiently for sooo long for this recipe from R that you’ll have to do something really nice to get me to give it to you.
- Fig-Walnut sticky buns by Culinary in the Desert
- Arugula salad with goats cheese, bacon and balsalmic fig dressing also from Culinary in the Desert
- Fig and blue cheese stuffed pork tenderloin – yes, from Culinary in the Desert. Joe clearly likes figs. He has good taste!
- Fig-gorgonzola crostini with caramelized onions from Sundry Buzz
- Pecan, fig and chilli tart by Antony Worrall Thompson
- Fig and pistacho biscotti (for if this biscotti is a roaring success) by James Martin, who i love…
p.s. please send me your fig recipes… thank you kindly.
p.p.s. update – biscotti is cooling, will cut it up and put it back in for its second bake and it will be ready in about half an hour if you fancy popping round for a late evening cup of tea??

Why do we expect the virgin Mary always to look peaceful and smiley? I’m sure she had grumpy days as well… as you would if your baby turned out to be strangely proportioned…. so prop it up in the hall as a reminder that we are all human – even Mary!

Ahahaha I love it. It’s true she had just gone through the trauma of childbirth, in a stable, suffered months of people judging her and then a loooooong journey whilst heavily pregnant. She was probably grumpy with joseph for letting in the portrait painter at such a time. I can’t imagine it was a pretty scene.

Sounds yummy. We just spent a few days in Marrakesh and the whole place was full of dates and figs and other dried fruit.

Indeed, Mary is definitely allowed to be grumpy on occasion, I just question whether I need a picture of her in said grumpy state. Just like I reserve the right to un-tag unattractive facebook photos of me…
Simon – how jealous as I?! Morocco has been in my top three places on my travel destination wishlist for about three years and I am still no closer to getting there!

I can’t believe there are any similarly unattractive photos of you out there!
So what do you do with an unwanted picture – you could give it away, auction it on ebay, use it as a tray(?) paint it with blackboard paint and use it as a memo board…..
but what if slightly dodgy picture turns out to be a 15th century lost treasure…we had a similar one which turned up in a corner of the vestry at Church which looked really unimpressive but was said to be worth quite a bit
you’ll probably never know!

I have a tried & tested fig roll recipe if you’d like it? (fig rolls like the biscuits obviously, not figs in a roll…!)
p.s. I have been most excited to discover your blog and all the cooking-related things :)

I LOVE fig rolls! Seriously, I used to eat them by the pack. If mum and dad were foolish enough to leave a pack unattended in the cupboard, it would not be there when they got back from work. I also used to be a few pounds heavier… ;)
